Oxford V3990 near Ulleskelf.

On 28th March 1942 the pilot of this 54 O.T.U. aircraft was undertaking an instrument flying exercise as part of a night flying training flight when, while flying in poor weather, at 05.25hrs the aircraft dived into the ground at just under a mile south of Ulleskelf. The pilot was sadly killed as a result of the accident. The reason why the aircraft crashed was not understood.

Oxford V3990 was built to contract B.55347/39 by The Standard Motor Company Ltd. at Canley, Coventry and was awaiting collection in June 1941. After a short period of storage it was taken on charge by 54 O.T.U. at Church Fenton on 8th July 1941. As a result of the accident on 28th March 1942 Cat.E2/FA was the assessment of the damage and the aircraft was written off.
