On 23rd August 1942 this No.2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft was being flown on an air to air firing execise off Skipsea coast when, soon after breaking away from the third on the towed target, it dived into ground near Hornsea. Both members of it's crew were killed. It was thought that the aircraft had suffered a high speed stall which resulted in control being lost.
The aircraft had been built to contract B.41906/39 by Fairey Aviation Ltd. at Stockport and was awaiting collection in May 1941. After a lengthy period of MU storage it was taken on charge in October 1941 by 236 Squadron who were based at Carew Cherition. 236 Squadron ceased operating Beaufighter MkIc's in February 1942 so the aircraft passed into the charge of 2 (C.)O.T.U. at Catfoss but as a result of the accident on 23rd August 1942 it was destroyed with Cat.E2/FA damage being recorded on the paperwork.
