Beaufighter R2070 at Catterick airfield.

219 Squadron had been operating a very early Beaufighter in October 1940 and on 7th October 1940 the aircraft suffered damage at Catterick when it undershot on landing and the undercarriage collapsed after it struck a pile of stones. The damage was repaired.

Beaufighter R2070 was built to contract 983771/39 by The Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd. at Filton and was awaiting collection in July 1940. Shortly afterwards it was delivered to 219 Squadron at Catterick. On 7th October 1940 it sustained Cat.R/FA damage in the incident detailed above as stated but repaired on site by a team from Bristol's. 219 Squadron left Catterick on 12th October 1940 leaving behind R2070. They were replaced at Catterick on the same day by 600 Squadron and when R2070 was repaired it was taken on charge by 600 Squadron. At a later date the aircraft was transferred back to 219 Squadron who were now based at Tangmere and on 21st March 1941 it was destroyed, with Cat.W/FA Burnt damage recorded, when it dived into the ground at Eastergate, Sussex.
