Spitfire N3294 near Withernsea.
On the 4th of July 1940 the pilot of this aircraft was undertaking a gunnery training flight and when he was flying in cloud he
lost control, the aircraft dived into the ground near Withernsea. Sadly he was killed in the resulting crash but the exact location is
not yet known.
Pilot - Sgt Emrys I Lewis RAF (531760), aged 24, of Llannerchymedd, Angelsey. Buried Llandinorwig Churchyard, Caernarvonshire, Wales.
Spitfire N3294 was built to contract 527113/36 by Vickers Armstrongs (Supermarine) Ltd. at Woolston and was first test flown on 18th January 1940.
It was delivered to 9 MU at Cosford and placed into storage on 22nd January 1940 where it remained until being issued to 222 Squadron at Duxford on
9th March 1940. It moved with the unit to Digby on 10th May 1940, to Kirton-in-Lindsey on 23rd May 1940, to Hornchurch on 28th May 1940 during Dunkirk
evacuation and then back to Kirton-in-Lindsey on 4th June 1940. It was destroyed in the crash detailed above with Cat.W/FA damage being recorded and
was struck off charge on 12th July 1940.
