Sopwith 1F1 Camel D9537 near Beverley.
On 24th April 1918 the pilot of this No.72 Training Squadron aeroplane lost control while on a flight in the Beverley area. At 07.55hrs it dived into the ground and he was killed. Exactly where the crash occurred is not known though was probably in the general region of the aerodrome at Beverley where the unit was based. A Court of Inquiry was held but could not determine why the pilot lost control. This pilot had been involved in a number of minor flying accidents and incidents in the days prior to his death.

Linden Richardson was born in Spring 1899 and as a child attended Archbishop Holgate's School. The family lived on Millfield Road, York. He initially served as a mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps from August 1915 but transferred to undertake pilot training in 1917. He was posted to No.49 Training Squadron on 21st January 1918 and then to No.72 Training Squadron on 25th February 1918. He joined the RAF when it formed on 1st April 1918 and the RFC folded.
On 16th March 1918 he forced landed an Avro 504 near Cherry Burton. On 20h April 1918 he crashed Camel B4627 at Beverley. On 21st April 1918 he crashed Camel C12 at Beverley and on the same date he force landed an S.11 Shorthorn at Hall's Farm between Beverley and Tadcaster.
