Sopwith 1F1 Camel B5598 near Beverley aerodrome.

Prior to this flight the pilot was sent from Scampton to Beverley with instructions to collect the Sopwith Camel and to fly it back to Scampton to join No.60 Training Squadron where he was an instructor. On 9th July 1918 he took off from Beverley aerodrome but soon after leaving the ground the engine choked at 300 feet. The pilot attempted to turn back toward the aerodrome and to glide back but the aeroplane lost height and then stalled, at just 150 feet above the ground and there was not height height to regain control and it dived into the ground. The pilot was seriously injured and died the following day.

Pilot - 2Lt Harry Duncan Teetzel RAF, aged 21. Died 10th July 1918. Buried Beverley (St.Mary) Church Cemetery, Yorkshire (C.31).


Harry Teetzel was born 6th May 1897 and was the son of Roland Bruce and Christina (nee McIntyre) Teetzel of Highgate, Ontario, Canada. He may not have served in the army prior to enlisting into the Canadian section of the Royal Flying Corps because his service file suggests he was working as a clerk until September 1917. He was posted to No.60 Training Squadron on 27th March 1918 and joined the RAF on 1st April 1918 when it formed.
