Airco DH.4 A7748 near Catterick.

During a training exercise on 7th February 1918 this No.46 Training Squadron aeroplane was put into a dive over the general area of Catterick, where the unit was based. While pulling out of the dive at low height the aeroplane stalled, having no height remaining to regain control the inexperienced pilot crashed. The pilot was killed in the crash. Exactly where this accident occurred is not known but it was within the Richmond registration district in which Catterick lies.

Pilot - 2Lt Jack Pitt RFC, aged 19. Buried Longdendale Cemetery, Cheshire.


Jack Pitt was born on 27th August 1898 and was from Mottram, Cheshire. His service file has his name as "John". He received a commission to the rank of temporary Second Lieut on probation on 27th September 1917. He was posted to No.68 Training Squadron from 29th September 1917 to 19th October 1917 and was then posted to No.46 Training Squadron.
