Airco DH.4 A7617 near Catterick.

On 30th October 1917 this No.46 Training Squadron, Royal Flying Corps aeroplane flew into cloud, then broke up in a spin during a flight in the Catterick area and crashed at 10.45hrs killing the pilot.

Pilot - 2Lt Harold Pearce Stuttard RFC, aged 21. Buried Whitworth Cemetery, Lancashire.


This photograph appeared in Brian Rapier's "White Rose Base" book but he did not attempt to identify it other than stating it was a DH.4 crash at Catterick. Given the state of the damage it is likely to show a fatal crash and it may well be A7617. The straight hedge lined with trees is possibly the old Great North Road. It could also be DH.4 A7585 that crashed near Kirby Fleetham.
