Unidentified aeroplane at New Edlington, Doncaster.

On 27th October 1916 an unidentified Royal Flying Corps aeroplane was being flown from the London area toward an aerodrome in the North of England when the pilot became lost. He made a forced landing on the recreation ground at New Edlington, near Doncaster to check his location. A crowd gathered around the aeroplane and later, on attempting to take off, a child was struck by the aeroplane's propeller and killed.

Pilot - 2Lt Andrew Cameron Kiddie RFC.

Bystander - Mstr Leonard Savage. Aged 13. Lived at 18 Queen's Crescent, New Edlington. Burial location unknown.


Andrew Kiddie was born on 7th November 1890 in South Africa. He had initially served with the 18th South African Mounted Rifles but switched to the RFC and was appointed to the rank of 2Lt on 1st August 1916. He was awarded a Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate (Cert.No.3719) at Brooklands on 17th October 1916. After training he was posted to France and served with 32 Squadron. After a spell instructing in England he was posted back to France and served with 74 Squadron. He transferred to the newly formed RAF in April 1918 and was later placed on the Unemployed List on 20th February 1919. In 1919 he was awarded the DFC and Belgian Croix de Guerre for earlier service.
