Unidentified aeroplane near Catterick.

On 20th February 1916 this Royal Flying Corps aeroplane was being flown in the Catterick area when the pilot fell from the cockpit after it nosed dived and rolled over. He was killed on hitting the ground in the Catterick area.

Pilot - 2Lt Charles Gordon Proctor RFC, aged 18. Buried Longbenton (Benton) Cemetery, Northumberland (A.6.30).

Charles Proctor was a son of Mr and Mrs C E Proctor, of Forest Hall, Newcastle. He had served with the 3rd North Staffordshire Regiment and / or 10th East Surrey Regiment prior to being seconded to the Royal Flying Corps. His service file lacks any useful information and he appears to have held no Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate. The CWGC entry spells his surname "Procter" rather than Proctor, which was the way it was spelt in records that exist of the era.
