Meteor near Settrington.

On the 4th of March 1952 a Meteor flew into the ground between Settrington and Scagglethorpe, the aircraft smashed through a hedge and wreckage was spread over an area of 300 yards. Mrs Corner, who lived nearby raised the alarm, with the police other services being soon on the scene. The pilot was killed. The aircraft was scene to follow the contour of the hillside it had just flown over and carried the descent into the ground.

Pilot - P/O Peter Barton Brown RAF (2492698), aged 19, of Northwood, Middlsex. Buried Driffield Cemetery, Yorkshire (P4968).

The pilot had 239 hrs of flying experience with 27 hrs on Meteors. At the Inquest, the Coroner gave a verdict of "misadventure" to the cause of death. He was born at Pinder, Middlesex on 8th April 1931.


I do not know exactly where this aircraft crashed although the area contained in this photograph is a likely area and a grid reference for this field is contained in a couple of sources.

YAM records state that this aircraft flew into the ground near to Rectory Farm, Low Moor near Rillington whilst on low level exercises.
