Dornier Do217 near Muston, Filey.
On 3rd February 1943 this aircraft and others flying with it were tasked with bombing Sunderland. At a similar time
a Beaufighter of 219 Squadron based at Scorton was on a training exercise and in the control of Seaton Snook. It's crew F/Lt
John Willson and F/O Bunch were ordered to patrol at 11,000 feet. Somewhere near the North Sea coastline in the Middlebrough
area contact was made with the Dornier. The Beaufighter gave chase and later opened fire in the Filey area. Bunch's bullets
found their mark to the west of Filey. The aircraft crashed at Muston at 20.35hrs. Upon investigating the crash site no
bodies were found, it was thought the crew had baled out but had then drifted out to sea and had drowned howevr no
trace was ever found of them.
