Hurricane P3901 at Clifton airfield.
This Hurricane crashed at Clifton airfield on the 25th of November 1941 with no-one being injured, nothing more is known except the aircraft received Cat.A(c) damage
and was repaired on site. Clifton's ORB briefly states: "Hurricane P3901 from 13 Grp. Flt. Woolsington, crashed Cat.A(c)."
Pilot - unknown, uninjured.
Hurricane P3901 was built to contract 962371/38 by Hawker at Brooklands and delivered in July 1940, believed directly to 615 Squadron at
Kenley, it was a Battle of Britain veteran. It was transferred to 303 Squadron at Northolt on 2nd August 1940 which formed that day
and served with them until the unit converted to Spitfire I's in January 1941. It was then transferred to 253 Squadron at Leconfield and
moved with the unit to Skeabrae on 10th February 1941. 253 Squadron converted to Hurricane MkIIb's and IIc's in July 1941 and ceased
operating Mk.I's in August 1941 when the aircraft was transferred to 55 OTU at Usworth. It suffered it's accident at Clifton
on 25th November 1941 and was repaired on site and returned to 55 OTU on repair and served until it suffered a Cat.E2/FA
accident on 28th April 1943 when to flew into Manwitch Fell, Croglin, Cumberland.
Hurricane P3901 was offically assigned to 55 OTU, it is thought that Woolsington borrowed the aircraft and used it as
a Station Flight aircraft for a time. Woolsington had a large grass airfield, the home of 83 MU (Salvage and Repair
Unit) and the RAF Mobile Dental Surgery Unit. It had one hard standing and a grass runway. Why it was at Clifton is not known.
