Halifax JB859 at Wombleton airfield.
On 27th April 1944 this Halifax was being taxied on the airfield at Wombleton in preparation for take off for a Bullseye training
flight when at 23.17hrs it taxied into the back of Halifax JD106 which was parked awaiting take off. The rear gunner of the other aircraft
was sadly killed. The pilot of JB859 was busy carrying out cockpit checks and is was reported that he and his crew were not keeping a
good look out.Halifax JB859 suffered only minor Cat.A/FA damage and was repaired on site. Nothing is known about the pilot or his crew.

Halifax JB859 was built to Contract 1808/C4/ by E.E.C. Ltd at Salmesbury and delivered directly to 419 Squadron at Middleton St.George
in February 1943. It transferred to 1666 HCU at Dalton on an unspecified date in late 1943 and moved with unit to Wombleton on 21st October
1943. As stated in the incident above it suffered Cat.A/FA damage and after repair it continued to serve with 1666 HCU. The
Unit disbanded on 3rd August 1945 by which time the aircraft had been flown to an MU store and was struck off charge on 1st November 1945
as 'scrap'.
