Hurricane at Clifton Airfield.
(possibly) On the 30th of April 1942 a Hurricane crashed at Clifton and sustained damage Cat A(c). There were no casualties. There is some confusion as to when this aircraft actually crashed and what the serial actually was.
Clifton ORB states "31. 4.42. Accident to Hurricane BM225, from Acklington. No casulaties. Cat A(c)." however there is no such date as the 31st of April or for that matter a Hurricane BM225. There were only four Hurricanes in that batch which served with 43 Sqdn, BN229, BN234, BN235 and BP700. The easiest to be written incorrectly is the Hurricane I have listed.
The aircraft was built to contract 110768/40 by Hawker at Brooklands and delivered in January 1942. It was issued on an unspecified
date in 1942 to 256 Sqdn at Colerne. It then transferred again on an unspecified date to 43 Sqdn at Acklington. It sustained Cat. A(c)/FA
on 30th April 1942 at Clifton and was repaired on site wfter which it returned to 43 Sqdn at Acklington. It then moved with the unit
to Tangmere on 16th June 1942 before transferring to 532 Sqdn at Wittering on 2nd September 1942 for 'Turbinlite' operations. It moved
with unit to Hibaldstow on 11th September 1942. This Unit disbanded on 25th January 1943 and the aircraft went to MU storage
and preparation for packing and shipping to Far East. No record of the unit it was issued to in Far East is known but it was struck off
charge on 31st August 1944.
Pilot - unknown, ok.
