Jodel D120 G-ATGX at Wombleton airfield.
On 3rd January 1966 this Jodel aircraft took off from Crosby on Eden airfield, near Carlisle with the pilot and one passenger
(the daughter of the pilot) on board, the intention was to land the aircraft on Wombleton aerodrome and for the two to visit
family in Helmsley. The pilot made a low pass of Wombleton to assess the suitabilty for this landing,
he then made a low turn at a height of roughly fifty feet when the aircraft lost height and struck the ground. It was later
reported the turn the pilot made was above the level of his skill and experience. He lost his life and his passenger
survived but with serious injuries, the aircraft was destroyed. The pilot's cousin was waiting for the two to land witnessed the crash.
The aircraft was first registered in November 1958, before it received its last serial number it was serialled F-BIXQ.
Pilot - Mr Thomas Raymond Watson, aged 40, a dentist, of Crosby, Maryport, Cumberland, killed.
Passenger - Miss Shirley Watson, aged 11, seriously injured. Taken to York County Hospital.
The pilot had been flying for just under three years at the time of the crash and held a Private Pilots Licence. He
had a total of 106 hours flying at the time of the crash, 11 of which were on the Jodel type. The Jodel involved in
the crash was delivered to him ten weeks before the crash, it is thought that all his hours on the type were on this aircraft.
