Caudron GIII 8950 near Shipton, York.
The aircraft was being ferried from Hendon to Redcar on 18th July 1916 when
it suffered an engine failure near York. The pilot force-landed the aircraft
at Shipton, five miles north of York and the aircraft was slightly damaged.

The pilot leant to fly at the Grahame-White School of flying, at Hendon in 1915. He had reached
the rank of Captain by 1918. He was one of five British airmen who were rescued from the North Sea
on 2nd August 1918 by a Dutch trawler and taken to Holland where they were later released. He
survived the First World War but nothing more is known of him.
Caudron GIII 8950 was built by The British Caudron Co. Ltd. at Hendon under contract no. C.P.145456/15 and delivered
to AAP Hendon (rolled across the grass from the factory) on 10th July 1916. It was tested and accepted on 13th July and transferred
to RNAS Redcar and flown north on 18th July 1916 and crashed on the flight. The repair took twenty one days so the aircraft
may have been dismantled and taken by road for repair. It arrived at Redcar on 8th August 1916 and suffered a Cat.W
flying accident at Redcar on 5th October 1916 when it crashed on landing and was completely wrecked. It was deleted
on 16th October 1916.
