Vampire at Clifton airfield.
As such this is not an actual accident but I have included it for its historical
interest value, it is believed to have been the very last military aircraft to
land at Clifton airfield and it almost ended in disaster. On an unknown date in
1956 a student pilot flying an unidentified Vampire mistook York Minster for that of
Lincoln Cathedral, and as a result confused Clifton airfield for that of his
home base of Swinderby airfield. By this date Clifton airfield had become
disused and a wire fence was erected across it dividing the land up between
two farmers. The pilot landed the aircraft on the main runway but upon
seeing that a fence now crossed the runway, he was forced to
somehow jump the aircraft over this fence. He did this without
damaging the aircraft. The plane was later refueled and he managed to
take off on an old taxi track near where a gypsy travelling site was later
located, between Green Lane and Water Lane. He returned to base without further incident.
Pilot - Name unknown, uninjured.
I would welcome further information regarding this incident.
