BE2c 1120 at Scarborough.

On 30th August 1916 this aircraft crashed on take-off from RNAS Scarborough, the aircraft was deemed unrepairable but hung around for some time before being deleted from stock on 22nd Septmeber 1916. The pilot survived the accident.

Pilot - FSL John C Tanner RNAS, aged 19, of Eversley Rectory, Basingstoke.


John Tanner was born in Cheltenham on 2nd July 1897 and was educated at Cheltenham Junior School and later at Marlborough. He received his commission in the RNAS on 14th February 1916 and was wounded in July 1917 in Arras, France and accidentally wounded in May 1918. Having risen to the rank of Captain he joined the newly formed RAF but died following a flying accident while instructing on the 1st August 1918 while stationed at the 56th Training Depot Squadron at Cranwell. He is buried at Eversley Churchyard near Basingstoke and was twenty one years old. The photograph of his grave was found elsewhere on the internet.


The aircraft BE2c 1120 was delivered from Beardmore and Co, Dalmuir on the 15th September 1915 to RNAS Redcar before being transferred RNAS Scarborough. It was damaged here on 14th January 1916 (detailed on this website), repaired and returned to RNAS Scarborough before the crash listed above.
