DH-6 B2856 near Whitby.

On 10th September 1918 the pilot of this aircraft forced landed it near Whitby for unknown reasons, the bottom wing and undercarriage were badly damaged but the pilot was unhurt. The records say it was repaired but this would appear unlikely for the reasons given below in its history.

Pilot - Name unknown.

DH6 B2856 was built by Airco for the RFC and transferred to the RNAS prior to 1st April 1918. (No RFC service details are known). It was taken on charge by M.A.D. South Shields and transferred to Tynemouth on 3rd September 1918 and moved to 510 Flight. 252 Squadron at Redcar shortly afterwards. Some serious confusion exists regarding this aircraft as records indicate that it was transferred to 517 Flight at Seahouses on 12th September 1918 which is most unlikely as 527 Flight of 256 Squadron were based there at the time. It seems probable that as no further records exist of this aircraft it was dismantled on site, transported out by road, was not repaired and disappeared to be scrapped.
