Halifax W1060 at Thornaby airfield.

On 23rd August 1943 the crew of this Halifax were landing at Thornaby when a tyre burst, the aircraft swung off runway and crashed. The aircraft was slightly damaged but was later repaired.

Crew - Names unknown.

Halifax W1060 was built to contract B982938/39 by English Electric Co. Ltd at Salmesbury and delivered to 78 Squadron at Croft in April 1942. It transferred to 502 Squadron at St.Eval in January 1943 and then on to 1 (c)OTU on an unknown date but almost certainly in August 1943. Following this incident at Thornaby Cat.B/FA damage was recorded and after repair it was issued to 1674 HCU where it served until put into storage and then struck off charge on 14th May 1945.
