Fury K8223 at Thornaby airfield.

On 12th November 1936 this aircraft stalled on an approach to land at Thornaby airfield and crashed. The pilot was uninjured and the aircraft was repaired.

Pilot - LAC J W Elliott (probably James Wilfred Elliot RAF (564608)).


If indeed the pilot was the suggested name above then F/Sgt Elliott was to loose his life on 29th May 1940 while serving with 56 Squadron on operations to Dunkirk. He was twenty five years old and is commemerated on the Runnymede Memorial. The identity of the Hurricane he was flying is not yet known by this researcher.
Fury K8223 was built to contract 419059/35 by General Aircraft Ltd at Hanworth and was delivered to 9 FTS on 24th July 1936. Cat.R/FA damage was recorded following this incident at Thornaby and it was repaired only to be written off after another accident on 19th May 1938 with Cat.W/FA damage being recorded. It was struck off charge on 16th September 1938.
