Audax K7319 at Thornaby airfield.

On 30th November 1936 this aircaft overturned on landing at Thornaby airfield in a high wind. The aircraft was later repaired. The pilot had already suffered one flying accident at Thornaby on 2nd October 1936 in Audax K5249.

Pilot - LAC Ernest Lyall RAF, ok.

It is possible that the pilot was one Ernest Lyall RAF (580214) who was to be killed on 26th January 1942 serving with 36 Squadron. He is commemerated on the Singapore Memorial. He was twenty seven years old. If indeed the two men are one and the same this researcher wonders why he never received his commission in the five years between the two incidents.
Audax K7319 was built to contract 437223/35 by A.V. Roe at Chadderton and delivered to 9 FTS on 21st July 1936. It suffered Cat.R/FA damage as a result of the accident above and was repaired and returned to service. It suffered another Cat.R/FA accident on 5th October 1937 and again it was repaired before finally being written off in an accident, with Cat.W/FA damage recorded, on 1st May 1940. It was finally struck off charge on 31st May 1940.
