On 27th July 2004 those on board this aircraft were undertaking a navigation exercise from Bournemouth to Teesside Airport.
After approx 2hrs 40mins of flight and whilst 16 miles from Teesside airport the engine started to run roughly. "Carburettor Heat" was
selected by the pilot and the engine ran smoothly for a short while before again running rough and losing power. With height being
lost approximately five minutes after the initial loss of power the engine stopped and the pilot radioed a 'MayDay' call. A suitable field was selected for a forced landing near Summerfield Farm, Swainby but the aircraft touched down half way along the field. The aircraft ran through a hedge which caused the nose wheel to collapse and the aircraft came to rest ten metres into the next field at 15.45hrs. Those on board escaped injury, the pilot was believed to be in his 30's while the passenger was the pilot's father.
Icing of the carburettor which resulted in engine failure was suspected for the engine problems (a problem this
website owner's own car suffered from at the time of the accident). The problem is compounded after the engine looses power,
the natural reaction is to apply more power but this makes the problem worse until the engine stops.
