Caudron GIII 8944 at Redcar

On 26th October 1916 this aircraft was damaged following a bad landing at RNAS Redcar, no further details are known.

Pilot - Flight Sub-Lt Leslie Charles Jackson Barlow RNAS. Of Romsley, Halesowen, Worcestershire.


Leslie Barlow was born in Stourbridge in 1898. He entered the RNAS on 6th August 1916 and after completing his training he was posted to France. He transferred to the RAF on its formation and was serving in 82 Squadron RAF when he lost his life on 18th June 1918. He is buried at Villers-Brettonneux Military Cemetery, Somme, France and was twenty years old. The photograph of his grave was found on "www.greatwar.co.uk".


Caudron 8944 was built by the British Caudron Company Ltd at Hendon and delivered to AAP Hendon on 23rd May 1916 where it was tested and accepted on 16th May 1916. It was then dismantled and transported to RNAS Redcar where it arrived on 11th July 1916. It was damaged in an accident at Redcar on 11th September 1916 and repaired only to suffer this accident as detailed above. There is no record of it being repaired after this second mishap and it was deleted from stock on 29th January 1917.
