Caudron GIII 8942 at Redcar.

On 23rd December 1916 this aircraft was wrecked when it crashed on landing at Redcar, the pilot survived but suffered from shock.

Pilot - Probationary F/O Douglas Arthur Lancaster RNAS, suffered shock.


Douglas Lancaster entered the RNAS on 22nd October 1916 but nothing is known of him after this mishap at Redcar.
Caudron GIII 8942 was built by British Caudron Company Ltd of Hendon and delivered to AAP Hendon on 6th May 1916 where it was tested and accepted on 10th May 1916. The next day it was transferred to RNAS Redcar where it arrived on 14th May 1916 and entered service with their Flying School. On 20th October 1916 this aircraft suffered engine failure, it's tail was damaged in a forced landing at Redcar damaging it but not seriously. Following repair it returned to service with the Flying School and suffered the incident recorded above in December 1916, following assessment it was deemed beyond economical repair and deleted on 19th January 1917.
