Caudron GIII 3867 at Redcar.

On 8th September 1916 the engine of this aircraft failed in the air and the pilot attempted a force-landing near Redcar but the aircraft overturned doing so and was completely wrecked.

Pilot - Probationary Flight Sub-Lt John Manners Mapplebeck RNAS. Slightly injured.


John Mapplebeck was born in the Dolgelly area of Merionethshire (now Gwynedd), Wales in 1893, by the 1911 census he was living in Kings Norton, Worcestershire. Nothing more about him is known.
Caudron GIII 3867 was built by Caudron and was delivered to RNAS Redcar on 29th July 1915. It spent some time going between the various Yorkshire RNAS Stations from here onward : to RNAS Scarborough on 4th August 1915 where it was tested and accepted four days later. It transferred to RNAS Hornsea/Atwick on 11th August 1915 before being brought back to Scarborough on 10th September 1915. It suffered a minor accident at Scarborough on 14th September 1915 but was repaired on site before being tranferred back up to Redcar on 21st October 1915 where it served out it's time for nearly a year until the crash at Redcar on 8th September 1916 detailed above. It was finally deleted from stock on 19th September 1916.
