On 16th April 1916 this aircraft crashed on landing at Redcar sustaining minor damage, the pilot is not thought to have been injured.
Pilot - Probationary Flight Sub-Lt Maurice Ordish Fairhurst RNAS.
Little is known about Maurice Fairhurst's WW1 flying other than he completed his training and was posted to operational flying. He ditched an aircraft in the sea off the Scilly Isles on 14th June 1918 and unfortunately his observer at the time died. He survived WW1 and was transferred to the Unemployed List in February 1919 but was Mentioned in Despatches on 29th August 1919 for his wartime flying.
Avro 504 1486 was built by Brush EE co Ltd of Loughborough and delivered to Redcar on 13th March 1916, it was tested and accepted there on 31st March 1916. The aircraft was later repaired following this incident in April 1916 and would later be damaged a number of times at Redcar, on 29th October 1916 and after repair again on 24th January 1917
which was severe enough to write it off. It was finally deleted from stock on 14th February 1917.
