Sgt Angus John MacDonell RCAF (R/283114).

Angus MacDonell was born in 1925 (15th January 1925 is stated on correspondance between F/O McGregor's mother and the RCAF, which would mean it was his birthday when he died). Little else is known about him other than his father was Angus S. MacDonell but his mother's name is not yet known and they lived at Green Valley, Ontario, Canada. He was the Mid Upper Gunner in Frank Mooney's crew and on Halifax LK878 when it crashed near Felixkirk.

Sgt MacDonell was twenty years old and was buried at Harrogate Stonefall Cemetery with his crew on 20th January 1945.

CWGC listed his surname as "MacDonnell" on their website as of 2011 when this webpage was last updated and also "MacDonell" on the CWGC gravestone! I contacted them in 2011 and they confirmed that "MacDonell" is correct as per the information found in their records. I thank CWGC for their contact. On correspondance between 1679 HCU and the McGregor family after the deaths the Commanding Officer of 1679 HCU gave the spelling as "MacDonnell" adding to the confusion, one would possibly expect the unit at the time of their deaths to know the correct spelling !! I would welcome contact from the MacDonell family, as I would from any family connected to any flying death in Yorkshire, but in this case hopefully they could clarify the correct spelling.
