On 16th December 1943 this 408 Squadron Lancaster crashed into high ground on an area known as Murton Common, near to where Silver Hill Farm once stood at the top of Sneck Yate Bank which is generally between the small villages of Hawnby and Boltby. The land was probably cultivated farmland at the time of the crash. The crash site was probably easily cleared of the wreckage with it being so close to a good road so little remains today to show what occurred there in 1943. The site today is on private farmland but with a public footpath running up the side of the field. To date I have yet to seek permission to do a field walk across the land to search for surface remains to photograph and have only walked up the edge of the field next to the footpath where I have spotted a few peices of the aircraft. The photograph above shows the field into which the aircraft crashed, taken in January 2007.
Another view of the crash site from a different angle (photo taken in March 2004).
I have only found small fragments on the surface at the edge of the field, these include a number of peices of perspex and a .303 bullet case.
A larger peice of perspex was found nearby in the remains of a wall in 2005.
An electrical junction box found by Eric Barton at the site in the 1990s.
A view of Silver Hill Farm making a reasonable atmospheric photograph in black and white. The ruined outbuildings of the former farm have now been converted into a private residence.
